Executive Summary & Guarantee
Class Control is developed by Eziyaway (Pty) Ltd specifically for schools, teachers, computer laboratories, and training centers. Our fundamental design philosophy is:
We believe classroom technology must respect student privacy and educational safety without requiring complex account creation, cloud tracking, or invasive surveillance outside the classroom walls.
Local-Only Network Architecture
Class Control communicates directly between the Teacher (Admin) phone/tablet and Learner phones/tablets through your Local Area Network (LAN) or a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot:
Local Subnet Beacon
Learner stations broadcast heartbeat packets within the local subnet (e.g., 192.168.x.x) so the teacher's console can discover active devices without internet access.
Peer-to-Peer Commands
Commands (app launching, screen sharing, lock/unlock) are delivered point-to-point between devices connected to the same Wi-Fi router.
* Note: The app functions 100% offline. No cellular data or external internet connection is required for classroom operations.
Information We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect, process, or sell any of the following:
- No Personal Identifiable Information (PII): No student names, national ID numbers, birth dates, phone numbers, or email addresses.
- No Account or Password Profiling: Students enter the station with zero login, zero passwords, and zero registrations.
- No Audio or Camera Recording: The app does not access the device microphone or front/rear cameras.
- No Cloud Analytics or Location Tracking: GPS coordinates are not recorded or uploaded.
Local Data Stored on Device
To maintain teacher preferences and kiosk settings across device reboots, Class Control stores minimal configuration locally on the phone using Android's encrypted SharedPreferences:
| Data Item | Purpose | Storage Location |
|---|---|---|
| Admin PIN (4 Digits) | Restricts access to Teacher Console (Default: 1234) | Local Device Storage |
| Allowed Apps Whitelist | Package names approved by the teacher for student use | Local Device Storage |
| Station Nickname | Friendly label (e.g. "Station 04") assigned by teacher | Local Device Storage |
| Recent Usage Log | Circular log of app launches during the current class session | Temporary In-Memory / Local Cache |
Teachers or administrators can permanently wipe all stored data at any time by clearing application storage in Android Settings or uninstalling the app.
Android Permissions & Purpose
Class Control requests only permissions essential to classroom device governance:
Used exclusively in Learner Mode to detect the top active application. If a student attempts to navigate into unauthorized applications (e.g. System Settings, Social Media), the app gently guides the learner back to approved learning tools.
Used to display the "Station Locked" warning screen or educational lock overlay over unauthorized screens, preventing bypass of classroom rules.
Used when the teacher requests assistance via Live Screen View, or when the teacher broadcasts their screen to all student tablets. Requires explicit user/admin consent via the standard Android system dialog.
Allows the teacher/administrator to view installed educational apps (e.g., calculator, reader, digital books) and add them to the student's allowed launcher list.
Enables UDP multicast discovery between student devices and the teacher console on the local network router.
Screen Sharing & Streaming Safeguards
Class Control includes real-time screen assistance capabilities designed strictly for pedagogical support:
- Ephemeral Transmission: Screen frames are streamed live across the local Wi-Fi connection and are discarded immediately after rendering. No video recordings or frame captures are saved to disk or sent to the internet.
- Visible System Notification: In accordance with Android security policies, an active foreground notification is always displayed while screen streaming is running.
- In-Classroom Operation: Streaming can only function when both devices are actively connected to the exact same local Wi-Fi subnet. It cannot be triggered over cellular networks or from outside the school.
Kiosk & App Locking Policy
Class Control functions as an educational launcher / kiosk. On dedicated school laboratory devices, setting Class Control as the Default Home launcher prevents unauthorized web browsing, inappropriate app installations, or accidental system reconfiguration by learners.
Exiting Learner Mode always requires the Teacher PIN. For emergency access if a teacher forgets the PIN, a secure daily key recovery mechanism is provided at eziyaway.co.za/apps/class_control/reset.php.
Children's Privacy Compliance (COPPA, FERPA, POPIA)
Because Class Control is utilized in primary and secondary schools:
- COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act): We do not collect personal information from children under the age of 13.
- FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act): No student educational records or transcripts are created, stored, or processed by our software.
- POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act - South Africa): Class Control complies with South African data privacy principles by minimizing data handling to local device memory.
- Google Play Families Policy: The app adheres strictly to Google Play child safety guidelines. Ads (if loaded in free tiers) use COPPA-compliant flags with non-personalized configurations.
Security & Access Management
Administrative commands (lock, broadcast, screen view) are protected by a localized 4-digit PIN. We recommend teachers change the default PIN (1234) upon initial classroom setup.
The PIN is stored only in the internal storage of the teacher's device and is never uploaded to remote databases.
